In October 2021, during my puppy class I was teaching, I met Bunker, a lively little Golden Retriever. He struggled to focus, lacked interest in toys, and played too rough with other pups. Despite being owned by a disabled Vietnam veteran, Bunker kept attending classes, although it was clear he needed more attention and practice. My heart broke for him when I learned that he was living outside, in the frigid Winter.
As Bunker continued attending, his impulsive behavior earned him the nickname “Bonkers.” I even joked with my coworkers that I swore off of Golden Retrievers! Amidst the challenges, I could see he had so much potential, but inconsistency in his training hindered his progress. He could never reach his full potential to have a wonderful life.
In February 2022, when Bunker didn’t show up, we checked on him and found him neglected, water bowl long tipped over and dry, and chained outside in the cold. After a discussion with his owner, who was physically unable to care for him adequately, I decided to take Bunker home with me.
Since then, life with Bunker has been immensely rewarding. He has earned titles in Master2 and RAE Rally, Elite Performer Trick, Farm Dog Certified, FITS, BCAT, CGCA, CGCU, VHMA, VSWB, THDX, and certified as a Go Team Therapy Dog! He’s my friend, my pal, my best buddy! -Emily B.
